Social Unity

A situation where different people are informally in agreement to one another and decide to act jointly for mutual benefit is termed social unity. It is a precondition for social-cultural and social-justice to peacefully resolving disputes in the communities or societies.

A school of thought posits that “social unity is important because political theorists claim that shared identities can help to foster social unity in culturally diverse polities”. Practically speaking, strength underlies unity, and whenever people act in unison with one another their strength increases thousand-fold. The most emblematic use of the broom is its message of strength in unity. “If you stand alone, you can easily be broken, but if you remain united, no one can break you”.

Social Unity: A Case Study of United Africa

“An old farmer asked his children to break a bundle of broom. None of them could do it, but each of them could easily break the broomsticks when the bundle was untied. The old man thus drove home to them the unique importance of living united and the danger of living divided. He then explained to them the inherent strength in unity, which would protect them against any external threat”.

We have under-exploited the symbolism of the broom which stand for strength in unity. Hardly have we focused on the strength in unity that the broom represents. The ultimate goal of Pan-African Unity Summit Group (PANAUSUG) is to preach and foster social unity in Africa.
